Keywords:
summary writing, narrative text, expository textAbstract
This study examined the role of schooling and text type in summary writing. Elementary school students were asked to write summaries of narrative and expository texts. Children in the 5th year produced more elaborate summaries than those in the 3rd year, but had difficulties in being faithful to the content of the text-base. Performance was better in relation to expository text. It was concluded that summary writing develops and is influenced by the type of text being summarized.
